Ok here is my story of my laptop status currently
Last night i was just skyping some friends until all of a sudden my laptop instantly shut down so i said it was weird because my laptop was charging so it wasn't suppost to die randomly so i decided to remove the charger and plug it back and turn on the laptop it worked but then when i look at the battery it's 0% plugged in and charging it says and if i unplug the battery it instantly turns off meaning all i have to do is leave the battery on and plugged but i feel like it might cause trouble in the future because when i click the start menu and click device manager it says "unknown device" in one of the section... i am currently using sony vaio model PCG-71912L i used it for 3 years and it ran perfect except for the one time i needed to replace the charger since it never charged cause charger being old :p but i have a new charger im using and it charges so any help? also the charger doesn't get overheated for some reason it just stays warm...

Solution
Try a different cord. Obviously you don't want to go purchase another one just yet, but sometimes aftermarket cords don't actually put out enough power to charge the battery and run the laptop at the same time. Especially if the cord is going or the battery is older and harder to charge.
The charger, is it an OEM part? Or an after market. If it is the latter, that could be part of your problem. They don't always work as well, or as long, as original parts.

Also, it could be the battery that is going. They don't last forever.

Have you tried charging it while the device is off and see if that works? If that fixes your issue, then something you are running on the laptop is draining it faster than it can charge while on.

Seeing that your machine is quiet old, we have to do some hit and trial methods. First of all we can get the battery status,
1) Open command prompt (can type cmd in search bar or run, assuming its windows 7)
2) Type the following command in cmd: cd %userprofile%/Desktop and press Enter
3) Type another command there: powercfg -energy and press enter. It will take some time to check the status of your battery, and please post the information that is displayed so we can identify the cause of your little problem here.

It's currently windows 8.1 but yes it used to be windows 7 before and that is where it originally was before.
