My laptop screen goes distorted when i scroll

Hello, hi my laptop screen has little squiggles of brown squares going right through it, it gets worse the longer it is like it till eventually it switches off comes back with blue screen saying it timed out waiting for video card to reset, can anyone help me i am a complete novice so as best as you can in laymens terms plz i would be very grateful thanks in advance
