My laptop switch off by itself

If I press my HP laptop power button, sometimes it switch on only the notification lights, sometimes it on and when I input my password and start doing anything on it, It hangs for a moment and then switch off by itself, if I try to on it after this it won't switch on please help me

if it has a removable battery try running it with the AC adapter and no battery installed....(not possible with all units, but, allowable with many)

Many laptops will not stay powered on if they do not sense a CPU fan of some type, or, maybe just the AC adapter has failed....
