Without the SIM card in place it's doubtful even your Service Provider can help trace it.
That said, you still need to tell them of the loss and that you still have the SIM. Unless there are crucial data on that phone, just buy another and use the SIM in that.
If you lost it outdoors, it's worth a trip to the local Police point and ask if it's been handed in. There are still some honest folks around.
