Hi.
My Samsung TV won't play certain mkv files it's maybe 1/20 mkv files. I've tried using mkvmerge GUI and set all the tracks' compression to none but it still won't play...
Here's what MediaInfo says:

Some video formats will use different settings and encodings for audio, it seems that your TV will only take a specific type of mkv, your best bet is to format the other videos into the exact same way as the video you no to work or hook up a laptop/computer to your TV and play your videos through that.

Found the problem it's the header stripping compression which some mkv files uses which has been some default option in mkvmergerge until v6 came out. You can remove header stripping by using fixMKV v2

Hello,
My (mid-level 2011 46" Smart) Samsung is having some difficulties as well w/ the .mkv, although it is able to locate, access, & playback that encoding via the HDD USB specific hub on the lower right side. (When facing the TV) As I purchased this TV 2nd Hand via Craigslist 16 months ago I did not receive any of the manuals/documentation upon purchase, but I did extensive research prior to purchase & this was actually the 1st time to try either HDD &/or .mkv since purchase. The "AllShare" software started up immed. upon insertion of a bus powered Seagate GoFlex 1TB HDD. (Seagate installs a proprietary Paragon NTFS version on any non Windows systems to allow for access/read/write without formatting or partitioning of the drive, a very nice feature for multi-platform users) I read this (& other) forums prior to attempting the playback, wanting to be sure to initiate properly & also to be aware of any possible obstacles I might encounter, and I did in fact come across the issue mentioned either of the "Subs" &/or of the header & footer at the beginning/end of the file, as the picture was pixelated/seemingly unprocessed for the 1st 30-45 seconds of both the start & end of the actual movie. Besides that it played fine throughout, & as the ending was the credits the only real distortion occurred at the very beginning. However, throughout the movie it would display certain scenes w/ the square "block" pixelation, & during those brief scenes (2-5 seconds) or sometimes immed after the color would also become "un-calibrated", then after a short time it would "lock" back into the proper format. I should note the file was 4.97 GB & thus true 1080P, though at best (when not distorted or off-color) it only appeared to be able to max out at 720P. My questions are: 1) how can I adjust/what do I do to fix the heading/footing of the striping, or whatever may be the culprit of the 1st & last 30-45 seconds? 2) How is a (presumably) 3rd Party encoder applied, such as .mvkvmerge? (Is it like firmware that I install via USB to the TV, or is it something used to recode/reprocess file formats prior to uploading to the TV? 3) Lastly, has anyone else had problems with the "block distortion/pixelation" as described above, & has anyone found a fix for this? Any & all feedback is appreciated, & I will attempt to load my TV Model info & the diagnostic info onto here for reference/comparison later &/or if needed/if it will be useful to anyone for a similar issue.

I have Samsung's UN55F7100 (resolution states 1920x1080). I hadn't had any problems playing any of my MKV, MP4, AVI files until today. For some reason, I had a MKV file that was 1920x1082. Samsung said it didn't support it but I know that it has played other MKV files before (resolution was 1920x808 - less than 1920x1080).

So I used Handbrake (on my Mac) to compress the file to 1280x720 (MP4 file) and voila, I'm able to play that file on my Samsung Smart TV. You can even compress it to 1813x1022 (as long as it's less than your optimal resolution).

Hope that helps.
