Jeremy Clarkson's neighbours must be pretty nervous. Can just see him buying one to go next to the Lightning on his front lawn. Surprised he hasn't bought a Concorde as well to be honest.

[citation][nom]amarok[/nom]This really makes me a little sad, and I'm not even from USA.NASA also announced to plunge the space station already in 2016 and the logic of both decisions is beyond me. No replacements for the shuttle the next 4-5 years and NASA is now depending on the russkis mercy and we all know their mood-swings and widespread corruption. All this has happen after obama appointed a new director. I guess epic fail and "no, we can't" will be his aftermath.[/citation]

As usual, a little research and common sense is too much to ask for before someone decided to spread political bullshit around. Obama has NOTHING to do with the Space Shuttle being retired; they've been scheduled for retirement for many years now. In fact, Congree under the Obama administration tried to find a way to -delay- the shuttle's retirement for several more years.

Of course, no one wants little details like facts in their politics...

Before I forget and end up accused of taking sides, it was a Republican congressman who introduced the proposal to save the shuttles a while longer.

For the "OMG OBAMA IS EVIL" types, though, might want to do a little reading. Bush ordered the end of the Shuttle program.

"President George W Bush accepted the recommendation and ordered the shuttles' retirement. He also directed NASA to complete construction of the International Space Station and develop new spaceships and rockets that could travel to the station as well as to the Moon and other destinations in the solar system as part of a programme called Constellation."

Where does the "Telegraph" get its info from? Jeez...
"The space shuttle Enterprise is the centerpiece of the James S. McDonnell (of McDonnell-Douglas Corp., now merged with Boeing) Space Hangar at the National Air and Space Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Va." - quote from the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center and NASM website.
Ah... STS Enterprise is already there... Hello
TH article is correct about the other facts though. Although, don't know if it would actually be worth more (even so named) since it never ventured into space like the other shuttles. It was used solely for atmospheric captive and unpowered drop/glide flight testing. In addition it was used in mate/demate testing with the external tank and SRBs and 747 transport, serving as a proof-of-concept vehicle.

How can they say dilapidated?! Those vehicles still work in prime condition with the safety of the astronauts still the number one goal! Complete BS of an article. And yes Obama's no decision on what to do with the Shuttle Program is his chicken sh*t method of cancelling it when it is actually most needed. Here you go Russia the Space Station now belongs to you...

I'll repeat it as many times as I need to.

"President George W Bush accepted the recommendation and ordered the shuttles' retirement."

Well at least he manned up and did it. You know the Columbia blew apart over Texas during re-entry due to politics over the International Space Station right? The big heads at NASA at the time were more concerned about everything but the safety of their crew. It's all over Youtube if you don't believe me.

I'd rather those 30 year old shuttles be retired than to have another one blow up after takeoff or during re-entry imo.

Absolutely; a 30 year old design is ancient technology in a field like space exploration, and a newer design could be much safer and likely much less expensive. I'm not arguing that they didn't need to be retired. I'm just tired of misinformed political attacks. Several posts in this thread have tried to use the shuttles' retirement as a political weapon against someone who had nothing to do with it, in pure defiance of any kind of fact, and that's laughable.

I have no issues with anyone who doesn't like Obama for legitimate reasons. That isn't a legitimate reason.
