I'm looking to build a 2.1 system for $250-$300. I already have a harmon kardon receiver my dad is letting me use. It will be in put in my room (aprox 100-150 sq ft). More then any thing, im looking for recommendations on speakers and subs that will match well together within my budget.

Thanks!

Audiophiles agree that some of the best speakers for the money are the Andrew Jones designed Pioneer set (it's a 5.1 or 7.1 set). Unfortunately, it seems to be sold out at newegg and not many left on Amazon either.
It would be in your price range if you got the book shelf surround speakers (2) and the subwoofer (.1)
Then you could always add the other missing pieces. (Center, left and right tower speakers)

But that brings up a bit of a question... Did you want tower speakers for the left and right channels or something smaller like bookshelf speakers?

Probably bookshelf speakers for now. I don't think there is enough room for tower speakers at the moment.
I have heard good things about the andrew jones speakers as well, assuming your talking about these.

I'll probably get these if I see them go on sale again. Browsing on slickedeals, Ive seen them go 80-90 during sales.

the bs22 are certainly a good choice though not the only one available to you. i would highly suggest going to a speaker showroom to listen to various models (best buy has one, some hifi audio places have them, i think guitarcenter has one).

personally i'm more of a klipsch fan myself. they are generally a bit brighter, detailed and articulate on treble due to the horn used. while not everyone likes this type of sound (some prefer the warmer sound of soft-dome tweeters) it really makes them sparkle a bit. i personally use a 5.0 set of quintet iv's in a 13x14 paired up with a klipsch sub and pioneer receiver and they have worked great. i'd have loved to get some bookshelf models (i've heard them and like them) but they were out of my budget at the time.

bookshelf speakers might have enough bass on their own without a sub for you. i'd listen in person to see if you feel you agree or if you'd like a little extra low end. a sub does certainly add quite a bit more low end kick though.

I went to my local BBY to showroom and it was difficult to compare due to background noise. the pioneers were good but the bigger speakers also seemed to have an advantage as they where louder without turning the 'volume knob'. I walked away liking the klipsch reference II's 5 1/4 the best. My local BBY was running a special on them for $200. How are these generally regarded compared to the pioneers?

might want to look at http://www.hhgregg.com/klipsch-5-25-bookshelf-speakers-2-in-box-price-for-each-/item/R15M?cid=PLA-10166420-222066&mr:referralID=64c4bf67-00ec-11e5-ba34-001b2166c2c0 i'm not sure if the ad is $99 for two or if they are trying to price each speaker at $99 (with two in box for $200 total). worth looking into since if you get a pair for $99 thats a good price.. bb will pricematch hhg.

i'd say the klipsch speakers are going to be better, though they are after all in a different price class but it also depends on your own preferences. the klipsch are going to be more detailed and a bit less warm while the pioneers are going to be warmer sounding. again, personally i really like how klipsch sounds myself.
