Need help factory reseting phone

I deactivated my child's Google account because the security setting were so strict, but I forgot to remove it from his phone first. Now we're locked out and it won't let me factory reset. I've tried to in settings and I've also tried with volume up and power key. Is there any way to bypass this and wipe it to factory settings?
