Need help for choosing a laptop for gaming

Hi everyone,
I have decided I would like to upgrade my crappy laptop and get a decent laptop so I can actually run Skyrim and Battlefield. I have been looking around the internet and found some pretty good options. I don't really want to go over $1,000. Here is a list of the good ones that I found.

1st option:

What do you guys reckon would be the best out of those laptops for gaming? Thanks in advance

Laptops aren't designed for gaming - you should really build a desktop instead if you aren't fixed on getting laptops.

The PO11TX also has the 840m and is cheaper at Dick Smith.

That aside, none of the computers are especially well suited for gaming, but the three with 840m are much better. As to the specific machine, some of them are local models not available elsewhere, so there is little data. I know that the Aspire and Asus chassis perform well.

Thanks for your answer. Would these laptops run skyrim at high/ultra at a 30fps+. they can run battlefield 4 on ultra at about 25-35fps so..

This is a great site for reliable notebook and graphics benchmarks and reviews.

This deals with the GTX840m and it's gaming benchmarks, amongst other things.

If you scroll down, it reports Skyrim at 32 fps at high and 1366 x 768

On it's benchmarks, Skyrim averages a few fps more than Battlefield 4.

This site also works the other way, you can look at games and see what card/setting will get you your desired fps. Integrated GPUS and desktop GPUS are also rates, by way of comparison.

The 840m is a little better than the latest AMD A10 APUs.

You may be able to get a sager laptop with a gtx 970m. I don't remember the model but I know someone mentioned it in a different post. It is much better than the laptops you have mentioned.You could also go for the lenovo y50, msi ge60 I think or an asus n series laptop if you want a branded laptop. Also the first 2 links don't work for me for some reason.

The OP is in New Zealand and so their budget will not extend to a Sager. In US terms it's about $650 to $700, so the Sagers and good ASUS550s are out of the range.

The OP has made it clear that they want a portable computer. They have already told that very politely to one poster. We have made our pitch, they are not buying it. We need to move on and answer their question.

At least someone understands. Like I said I don't really want to go over $1000. I'm leaning towards the 1st option, which seems to be the best bang for its buck

Also thanks for that website with the link, that has helped a lot. I don't really need the latest and greatest computer that runs games at like 100 fps, I just want a decent one that can run most games at medium to high(maybe ultra).

How about the Lenovo y40? It comes with and r9 m275 which is better than the 840m. Also, the laptop is actually made for gaming unlike those other ones. if I were you, I would stay away from an acer. They are known to be junk.
Edit: found a y50 with an i5 instead of an i7 but it comes with Nvidia gtx 860m which is even better than the r9 m275. That i5 will still crush anything you throw at it. In a laptop, the gpu is more important because you cannot upgrade it most of the time. Good luck!

I realize that you are trying to be helpful, but the OP is in New Zealand and his budget, although he says $1000, he means NZ$1000, so he has about US$700 to spend. In addition, he wants a product with local support. His main brand choices are HP, Acer, ASUS, and Toshiba. Lenovo may also be available. Even the y40 costs about $1300 in NZ and so is outside his budget, as is the ASUS 550 with any good graphics card.

My brother-in-law has used Acers in NZ for many years, for business and personal use, no gaming, and has been completely satisfied with their performance and build quality, so I would dispute you 'known to be junk' generalization.

The Y50 or even the earlier y510p are/were the best just under $1000 computer in the US.

If I were you and wanted to play games even slightly seriously on a laptop in NZ, I would want a computer with a Ge Forece 860m in it. (the older lenovo with SLI 755 would do too)

Have a look through the GPUs on the weblink I posted. You can also search the individual games and it will tell you how each GPU performs with them, That will help you decide exactly what GPU would be best for you. I have a US laptop, with a US power brick that I use in the USA, and a NZ power brick that I use back home.

Even so, the solutions being suggested require a larger budget, or you finding a steal of a deal or a refurbished/slightly used computer.

I actually live in Aussie, but I'm kiwi. I really like the look of the y50, how much would that be in Aussie dollars?

Sorry about that. On this site it makes a hell of a difference where you live because of the relative dollar costs prices, and availabilities. Amazon is not yet available Downunder, right?

According to lenovo, neither the y40 nor y50 are available in Australia ATM.
