I need some help in my current PC situation. I am going to college next fall for engineering. I just got an Acer Predator 17 1060 as a gift. The laptop is fast enough for my gaming and 3D CAD but it is extremely heavy and bulky. I am currently weighing my options. I want to either get another laptop that is more portable and keep my predator in my dorm or ditch the predator all together. My requirements are that I need to be able to run 3D CAD and be able to game and run any game with average graphic settings. The secondary laptop does not need to be able to run games. What laptops would you guys recommend and should I ditch my predator?

Ditch the predator and go for a lighter one with the same specs. For 3d CAD integrated graphics won't be good enough (not because of lack off power most of the time but because of lack of features).

By the time you get a light capable laptop you might as well just go a bit more expensive and get a laptop thats as good as your current one. If you can return the predator NOW so you have a bit more time to get a laptop.

College student to future college student:
You will probably learn more in class if you dont bring a laptop at all. Sure it might be nice to work on your assignment or follow along, but you can quickly lose focus on the lecture and end up far behind in no time.

Also college student here. Having a cruddy laptop in the labs sucks. Same with having a giant laptop (msi gt70-ond and then a dell e6420 before getting a light laptop with a 7700hq and 970m for game development :p).

It is true that writing things by hand makes you remember thing A LOT better than just typing + less distractions.

I currently cannot return it as I have been using it for a couple of months. I could sell it. Thank you for the answers! I will probably end up getting rid of it and getting a lighter one as mentioned. I'll probably end up trying to do notes and stuff by hand.

I had to sell my gt 70 because it was just not practical do drag around a massive laptop and use it. Try to stay under 15.6inch and get a screen with good colors as that is pretty much neccesary if you don't want to hand in a project and have the colors look all wacky on somebody else's screen.

Remember work first play later. Same goes with buying the laptop. What do I need for school then what do I want for myself.
