I'm looking to order a wicked-fast mobile workstation to compliment a 12.1" under 3lb. "carry-with" laptop. Any thoughts and advice will be much appreciated.
1_What is your budget?
$3,000 - $6,750
2_What is the size of the notebook that you are considering?
18.4-inch (or 19/20-inch if they existed...), or at minimum 17.3-inch
3_What screen resolution do you want?
1920-by-1200 WUXGA
4_Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop?
Desktop replacement, though portable when put in a wheelie suitcase like thingy, and carried if absolutely HAVE to. I.e., weight not a big deal.
5_How much battery life do you need?
1 hour would be good, but 15 minutes would work as well.
6_Do you want to play games with your laptop? If so then please list the games that you want to with the settings that you want for these games. (Low,Medium or High)?
No games.
7_What other tasks do you want to do with your laptop? (Photo / Video editing,watching movies, Etc.)
Excel, various GIS & mapping software, watching movies/video, OCR, voice-to-text conversions, occassional video editing, etc. The problem is I am a HEAVY multi-tasker, which adds up fast, so looking to make that NOT an issue.
8_How much storage (H.D.D Capacity) do you need?
To begin with, 500 gb. would prefer to a space to add an third HD later (6 months - a year). I say "third" assuming I would have an SSD for OS & apps, and then another HD.

I am open, though would prefer the "more reliable" brand...though I've had trouble figuring out which one that is. (use to like Lenovo, but not-so-much anymore.) And obviously going custom with this.

I am looking for a mobile workstation that can handle heavy multi-tasking without any hick-ups. E.g. recording video coming in from the tv-tuner, while having numerous internets tabs open, while typing a memo, while searching several gigs worth of docs, and also watching a movie in the background. Put another way, I want to be at a point where the only issues will be software (which is beyond my control).
To achieve this I was thinking:
Display - 18.4" WUXGA (1920 x 1200)
Processor - i7-980x (though I think I could do fine with much less here, but why not?)
GPU - SLI or Crossfire
Can you get more than 1GB DDR3 on video cards?
What is the advantage to having DDR5?
Memory - min. 12GB Triple Channel DDR3 SDRAM @ 1333Mhz
Question - why not 1600Mhz or 2000Mhz?
Primary HDD - Crucial RealSSD C300 2.5" 256GB SATA III
2nd HDD - 500 GB 7200rpm or 640 GB
Or get another 300GB SSD Sata III HD, and then a 640GB - 1TB drive for a 3rd HDD
Internal TV Tuner - yes (not sure the best here...)
Wireless - A/B/G/N & WiMaxx & Gobi 2000 & GPS & Bluetooth
Webcam - 3MP
However, it seems that every "mobile workstation" either has too little memory or a weaker GPU, or another glaring deficiency. Not sure if its a cooling issue, or just custom manufacturers trying to make machines "affordable", or simply limits to what Clevo supplies them.
