New Directv PVR Service?

Hello,

Seems like I read that DirecTV was coming out with its own TIVO-like device
and service this summer. Is this still the case? I don't see anything
about it on their website or on this group. If they are still doing this,
does anyone know anything about what it will be like? Differences from the
current Directivo?

I have one Directivo now and like it fine. I want to get another one,
especially since DirecTV does not charge any additional monthly fee for
additional Directivo units. Will DirecTV charge a different (additional)
monthly fee for their new PVR?

What are opinions? Should I wait to see what they're going to do with this
or just go ahead and get another current unit?

It will soon be obsolete. Whatever you do don't piss away $1,000 on
the HD unit.

It's just vaporware at this point.

You should most definitely go out and get another DirecTiVo unit - it's a
no-brainer. The DirecTiVo boxes are so wonderful and getting a new one
right away means you get to enjoy it that much longer.

There is still a $5.00 monthly 'Mirroring' fee charged by DirecTv for each
additional unit. Unless that has been changed since I last looked at the
web site...

That is different from charging the $5 mirroring fee plus a second $5 Tivo
fee. Another interesting point is that DirecTV Tivos have two tuners and,
as I understand it, the $5 mirroring fee applies to the unit, not to the
tuners. That's like paying $2.50/tuner. This is such a good deal that I am
putting in another Tivo to replace a VCR in another room. I have to pay for
the second tuner regardless, so the second Tivo is free (except, of course,
for the cost to buy it), and it allows me to record two programs at once if
I want to do so..

I think that's just for the additional receiver, which I'm paying anyway for
an additional standard receiver. I'll remove that from my account & replace
it with the 2nd Directivo for the same $5.00/mo.

Yea, but I've really been considering getting a HD Directivo. At $800-$1000
(depending where you look), that is not a no-brainer. I wish we could find
some more information about this just so that I could make an educated
decision. I'd definitely wait if it is worth waiting for. I would expect
that the new Directv DVR would do HD.

Anybody with some good, juicy inside information? <grin>

I took the plunge. Right now DirecTV doesn't offer enough to make it
worth the money to subscribe, but I can get eight OTA digital broadcast
channels for free (they don't transmit HD 100% of the time). That in
conjunction getting two tuners and being able to record up to 200 hours
of SD or 30 hours of HD seemed to be worthwhile even if DirecTV doesn't
offer an upgrade path, but I suspect they will. OTOH, I only paid $700
for it on eBay.
