Hello,

im planning on buying a new processor in january,
and im thinking of buying a amd phemon II x4 960T BE

does anyone currently have one?
I want to overclock it and unlock it.

so my question is has anyone been able to unlock any extra cores?
ive seen on various sites that it can unlock into a phenom II x6 1065T or something like that
and what is it like for overclocking? Im not going to go mad maybe 10-15% OC

thanks alot for any help

I own a Phenom II X2 555BE which would make my advice "similar" to what you need.

Depending on the CPU, the cores may be unlockable but then again, unlocking the cores on any AMD CPU is not guaranteed.

Overclocking is easily a guarantee, you should easily be able to bring up the clocks a few hundred MHz without touching the voltage.

If you fail to unlock the cores (Like I did at first) just reset the BIOS or head back into the BIOS and disable them, especially if you run into issues.

Unlocking the cores will however require extra voltage and possibly cooling depending on the cooler provided (as many AMD coolers are the same even for higher end CPU's).

I can't cover absolutely everything though, if I've missed anything (and I probably have) I'm sure someone else will cover that.

Well ive got an athlon II x3 425 now but I want more lmao
but I dnt have loads of money to spend
and the phenom I want is onli 90quid so its not that bad.

I definatly want to overclock so I will be asking for advise in the very near future.

and well if it does unlock, both cores or even just one cores its a win win situation lmao

Anyone else what to add anything?

thanks for your help pal

Well I was just goin to use stock because im only goin to slightly overclock
but id say about 20-30quid

would the stock cooler be ok for 10-15% OC?

cheers

It should be fine with a small overclock like that, I had my 955BE at 3.6GHz on stock cooler for a while and temps would sit in the high 50's. Taking it up to something like 3.6+ or higher may make one think about getting an aftermarket cooler. Unlocking the cores is no questions asked getting a new cooler.

20-30 quid should be more then enough for a decent alternative cooler.

So if I unlock the extra cores ill need a new cooler?
thats fine with me lol I dont want it to overheat.
any ideas of a few coolers I can look at so I know what to get?

if I do OC and unlock goes fine will my new GPU go fine with CPU
its a xfx ati radeon hd 6870 1gb?
and will my case keep everything nice and cool?
thats an xclio a380? I got it for free

so for all the questions lol

thanks alot

cooler master hyper 212 evo, or even to liquid cooling such as the corsair h80.

I would strongly recommend a new cooler when unlocking cores especially if you intend to overclock them. :p
As the poster above mentioned the CM Hyper 212 is a good choice for your price range and few people here would argue.

Your GPU will work fine with your CPU. If it's PCI-E and the slot on your motherboard is at least PCI-E 8x, it'll work fine. :D
Your case should also keep everything cooled fine!

AMD 1090T turn the turboe mode off in the bios and ramp the CPU ratio up to x20 voltage to 1.45V and its done and working a nice even 4Ghz. easy as taking a piss.

2nd best cpu ive even had next to my Intel 3930K. the AMD 1090T is faster than the New Bulldozer FX-8150 and i know thats a fact as i have one of those at home aswell and its a sack of ***. 1090T on a budget is the way forward. any questions mail me or pm me and i will gladly help you out.

P.S. get a Corsair H50 watercooler aswell, that is the best buy any builder can get unless they wanna blow silly money

ooo 6 core phenom at 4Ghz sounds realy good to me lol
What TPD on that?

thanks alot

Sure thing! Don't forget to mark one of us for best answer. lol. Many of us trying to build up our ranks haha. :kaola:
Hmm I think that would make for a 140W TDP maybe? :p

How do you mark as best ansure? Im using my phone lol

hmmm gunna have to find a good motherboard then lmao
I wonder how much can you OC a 960T by?
with a decent cooler?

I have no idea on a phone lol
I would estimate a stable OC with a decent cooler around.. 4GHz range? Possibly higher depending on cooling, motherboard etc..

For you without cores unlocked, I think I can guarantee at least 3.8-3.9GHz as long as the CPU behaves haha.
With cores unlocked, I would estimate maybe 3.6-3.8GHz? Well.. that's as far as I would go.

Lol wel im not going to go crazy OCing
but I do want to do it, cos why leave it stock when you can get extra performance for free lol

ive also read on a site that an athlon II x4 640 also unlocks to a six core?
which would be better, price to performance?

Good point, I mean even I overclocked my CPU. Free performance woo!
Haven't heard of an Athlon ever unlocking to 6 cores to be honest, I don't even think they bin their 6-cores to athlon-class CPU's.

I dunno.. no L3 cache with the Athlons D:
I would stick with the Phenom over the Athlon :D

Anyways I best head off to bed, almost 1AM here. Nighty and good luck!
