Took delivery of a Sony 34XBR960 a few days ago and love it!
Charter Cable set up the new box (can't use "Cable Card" with
Charter) and I get Disovery,ESPN and our regional sports network
(Red Sox in HD!).No network stations in HD at this time (no Patriots
games,except on ESPN).

My main question is about "burn in".I found a website that gives
advice on burn in for rear projection sets (keep contrast down,no
stock tickers on the screen, etc). They say that the part about the
contrast particularly applies during the first 100 hours of use.

How much,if any,of this advice applies to tube TVs? Any websites
that address burn in for CRT sets?

And,lastly, what about black/gray bars? Is one better than the other?
Is it imperative to avoid them when possible so as to avoid burn in?

Many thanks to all who reply to my long winded post!

Frank:

I've had a Sony 34HS510 for 10 months now and read

about my burn options.... I'm not worried any more.

I did two things......

I bought AVIA DVD to set contrast, brightness, sharpness,
etc via the Sony TV users menu... w/ 3D glasses..
Best sharpness might appear at 40% level !!

From the Torch modes: Vivid, Std, Movie, & Pro...
I use Movie mode 90% of the time.. Std 10%...

I was conscious of Black side bar 4:3 HD upconverts,
but worry little now...

Gray bars are better than black bars having less
burn in.... Gray can be 'zoomed wide'..

Black HD bars from 4:3 sources can not be removed...
unless the TV Network runs new color textured bars.

You have a Top of the Line HD set... Enjoy it...

IF you consider OTA antenna HD Network channels....

On a direct view {CRT} the possibility of burn in is moderately rare. Unless
you like to watch a station that has the news bar, or stock quotes on the
bottom, Even then one will need the contrast maxed and watch the set for
probably 20 to 40 hours straight to cause and burnin. Worse causes of burnin
in direct view teles are failure of the vertical deflection and folk then
using the tele as a radio rather than fixing it. Likeing apparently to see
the thin bright horizontal line across the screen.

I have the 32HS510 ...its cousin.
I don't see a big difference from "Std" to "Movie"
I also have the AVIA CD....sharpness looks best at 55% Different strokes

How far are you away from the tube?
