Hi,

I bought the new DirecTV DVR yesterday (as a replacement for a regular
DirecTV receiver) and while am I intrigued at the prosepect of doing the
Tivo thing--in order to record one program while watching another, I'll have
to buy a multiswitch, correct? And I will need more coaxial cable? I have
the 3 satellite oval dish. (I am doing this myself--maybe I should have had
professional installation?)

Changed my mind and will just return this. Maybe in the future when I am
doing better financially I might reconsider.

Call DirecTv and negotiate for a free installation.

Installation of what--the multiswitch and more cable?

Oh yea, the smart rep there managed to erase the wrong access card when I
switched receivers (the living room receiver went to the bedroom, because
the bedroom receiver went kaput). They are FedExing me a new access card
today.

You may very well have the multiswitch built into the oval dish. If there
are 4 coax jacks it's there. You just need to run another RGU6 cable for
the second tuner.

On the utility pole where I have my dish installed, there is a switch where
there are two inputs and two outputs--one wire runs to the bedroom and one
to the living room. So I would need another cable to the living room,
correct? I don't know how to do that, so I may just call DirecTV to see
what they suggest and maybe they will be willing to offer free installation.

That's strange. A triple-satellite dish comes with a 5-in 4-out
multiswitch. The inputs are hidden inside the mounting, and all
four visible coax connectors are outputs. If you were to keep
the unit, all you need to do is run another RG-6 cable from one
of the unused outputs.

It wasn't free. I bought mine at Wally World.:p
There was no rebate advertised for it. And you still have to pay the monthly
service (mind you, that wasn't too bad, but that isn't the reason).

and yes, I saw your next post that added the ;)

Return it and get 1 for free installed. No hassle with the hookup then.

Nah......I'm already just getting a free standard receiver installed on
Monday--which was the main reason I went to Wally world, but they only had
the DVR models. I gave it a shot but it needed more for full functionality
and I really just don't want it.

For the past few years, yes. But older triple dishes had external switches
(usually mounted right to the back of the dish pan) and some were even 2
output only.

It costs $5 a month, how can you not afford that? Just one freaking
starbucks coffee is that much.

Yup that happened to me when one of my DirecTivos was activated 2 1/2
years ago. If you complain enough they may compensate you with 3 months
free Showtime.
