The New York Times has had remarkable staying power in the face of year after year of losses, but unless they can return to the black, and I don't think that's going to happen, the bills will come due. They will probably start with Chapter 11 and stumble along for a few more years, but then they will go out of business.

Of course they could find a way to make a profit with this internet thing, but the question is which will come first, people stop using the word "twitter" and its variants, or the New York Times shuts down.

It will be interesting to see.

I like Twitter for news feeds, but I don't "tweet". I'm not that narcissistic.

[citation][nom]LLJones[/nom]Thank you NYT. Unfortunately, this action will only slow down the degradation of the English language. It is a shame that, generally speaking, the media does not hold itself to a high standard regarding the use of slang.[/citation]
The English language (or any other spoken language for that matter) does not 'degrade', it evolves. That is unless you think that we should all still be speaking Early/Middle English (which would be incomprehensible to you).

That being said, for a well regarded literary publication I completely agree with limiting the use of colloquialisms. Twitter is going to die off quickly over the next year or 2 (followed by the death of Facebook). While a rival to Facebook will likely take over, the entire concept of Twitter is useless and I'm surprised it caught on at all and has lasted as long as it has.

twit or twat is accurate. tweet just sounds un professional. i am on board the NYTimes ban. Now if they would just ban all references to iPad, iPod, Twitter and Facebook like they did myspace the world would be a better place. Cable news should ban them to so maybe they can come off as a little less annoying and a little more grown up.
