Newbie (to dvb) asking for help

I live in Canada. Several years ago I used a semi legal Dish Network
receiver for which I paid subscriptions through some "broker" in the USA. I
gave it up and obtained ExpressVu (which is OK). My family very much wants
to be able to receive The Gem Shopping Network which is supposed to be
available on G3C transponder 14 so I bought a PanSat 2500A, mainly to enable
me to get this channel (it is a fun thing to have in itself). I have
located the Gem channel and get a good strong signal quality but no picture
or sound show up despite the receiver apparently "seeing" it. I suspect I
have a problem with the settings of the transponder but unfortunately I have
not yet understood what all the numbers and letters given in lyngsat mean or
how I change them in the 2500A. Could anyone point me to instructions
written in understandable English please?
If I cannot manage to get this working I am considering getting another semi
legal Dish or Direct TV system as both carry the Gem Shopping channel. I
have lost the address of my old broker and would appreciate advice as to
whether this is still feasible. Also I don't know where I might obtain the
actual receiver in Canada. Any and all advice would be received with
thanks. I have no intention of going the highly illegal route of fiddling
with software and stuff in the PanSat receiver.
Please reply either to the group or be email. My email address needs a
little amendment as follows:- Change the first a to r. and also delete
nspm. TIA

You are right. You need to check the frequency, polarization and symbol rate
again. How ever,it could be possible that the channel is encrypted now. There
are a lot of channels that have encrypted video, but ITC audio.

Do you have a "C" band setup? because you need that to view GEM Shopping.
I'm not sure what size dish you'll need to receive it, but you can't pick it
up with a Ku Band LNB /Dish

Thanks. Yes I have a very old solid 8 ft aluminum dish which had not been
used for years. I put in a new lnb, actuator and polarotor as they had been
damaged by lightning and it works well on the few clear channels. The Pansat
does find the channel, and about 20 others, on C3C C band but only about
four actually give me pictures. None of these have any sound. The Ku, from
a separate dish, generally work well.

[on gray market subscription]
> If I am not mistaken, they just made it illegal for real in Canada

It has been nominally illegal for a while.

Your "just" comment is perhaps about the recent proposed Bill C2 that
died with the last session.

A Quebec judge, bless her heart, has recently ruled that such CRTC
rules banning gray market are in violation of basic Charter rights (of
course).

Thue, the whole Gray Market is still very much a gray area. Common
sense will, of course, eventually rule that freedom of communications,
freedom of expression, freedon of choice takes ~huge~ precedence over
any possible economic or (duo-block, English/French) cultural
considerations.

It also helps that CRTC has recently had their over-reaching hand
slapped.

My new lnb for the C band dish works well and I now see lots of things,
with sound, on G3C. Not the Gem Shopping Network though.
Has anyone actually managed to get sound and picture from G3C C band Gem
Shopping Network on Transponder 10, frequency 3915, Vertical polarity,
symbol rate 1860, audio 4131 as described in lyngsat's site
http://www.lyngsat.com/g3c.html ?
I have tried a number of variations with no success. I get no "quality
from this tp at all. I do get more "free" channels than lyngsat says
should be there although several are duplicated so I have no idea what is
going on. I do see and heat the Voice of America channels which suggests
that I am on G3C. Could the PanSat 2500A be picking up signals from a
nearby satellite? I thought that this should not happen.
I have spent a lot of time and a fair bit of money trying to get the Gem
Shopping Network and would very much appreciate any help I can get. The Gem
Shopping Network did not answer my query so I am stuck.
Thanks in advance

Hello everyone,
My latest information, from Lyngsat, is as follows

"Alan, to make the story short; majority of the consumer receivers are not
capable of processing sybmol rates lower than 2000 MBit/s.
GSN's SR is 1860 so that's the only possible explanation of your problem."

Does anyone know if it is possible to do anything with the PanSat 2500A to
fix this?

But it is still very illegal to steal service,no matter what the
status is regarding grey market.

Even if there isn't any specific law in Canada(there is an international
one) about stealing Dishnet and DTv signals, two things are still true:

1) you are aiding and abetting the satellite piracy industry
2) as far the canadian authorities are concerned -if you have the "hardware"
and the gall to steal american signals, then you have the attitude and the
hardware to potentially steal Canadian signals also!

It costs more to steal than to pay for it.

Like I said,it's the satellite pirates that made life diffficult for C band
in Canada.

I am even more confused now. One of my many queries yesterday went to
PanSat. Their interim response was to the effect that their receiver works
to 1000 symbol rate but they will check for me on Monday. Ain't life fun??

It will process low SR's. I am going to try with a PowerVU a little
later, but I did find a SNG at the GEM freq. They are saying it is
really there?

Thank you Sir,
I'd very much appreciate that. So far I have been unable to find anyone
who has actually seen this channel from G3C on dvb. The Gem Network has
still not answered my query but their web site does show that it should be
there. Lyngsat web master did not actually confirm that it is actually
there either, he simply said that the low symbol rate must be my problem.
PanSat said it would work to 1000 symbol rate so should be OK.
Incidentally the lyngsat G3C page shows about 20 free digital channels
whereas I get about 75 TV and 36 radio channels, most of which have pictures
although there are many repeats with strange (various languages) sound on
some of them. This was following what the PanSat calls a Smart Search.
Maybe it included the scrambled channels. This seems to look at everything
on the satellite and I now seem to have 37 transponders listed for G3C. I
thought there were only 24 on C Band or are these some sort of different
transponders? What is a SNG? I get lots of them some of which have a
"quality" associated and some without. A few produce actual pictures and
sound.
I wish I understood this stuff better. Perhaps I should buy a book :-}
It's interesting though.

The fortec lifetime works below 2 also,and I checked G3\C myself.A good
signal is shown on Gems, but do you think I lock it in.Nope!Even tried a
power scan....of course I'm after the horse and doggie feed, but I always
lock shopping channels just for fun and to use for a marker, when I'm adding
channels.

It is not advsiable to query any channels directly, because they are not up
there for us!If enough people do that they will encrypt the signal,so only
enquire among the sat newsgroups and satforum!

a lot of the "SNG" labelled channels are probably just wild feeds, meaning
they are up and down all day. Used by the sat-trucks to beam signal to the
satellite so the receiving station can get it. Sometimes you'll get unedited
live newsfeeds of news reports.

In the cotext of the satellite, there may be 24 or 32 transponders up
there, but in the contenxt of what is being transmitted, you found 37
carriers.

My original question, or one of them anyway, was intended to find out if
the channel from the Gem Shopping Network which is alleged to be transmitted
on satellite G3C on C band in dvb format can actually be seen by anyone. So
far I have found no one who has and I cannot see it myself. I would very
much appreciate it if someone, anyone, with the appropriate equipment would
have a look and let me know the result. To save you looking up the details
this is what lyngsat says in its G3C page http://www.lyngsat.com/g3c.html "
3915 V tp 10 Gem Shopping Network DVB 1860 - 7/8 ?-1 - 4130 ?-1 4131 E
North America V " I note that this does not have an F on it as some do,
What does this mean? Also what is the meaning of the - 7/8 after the symbol
rate? I also note that the symbol rate given as 1860 is much lower than
that of most channels. Is this significant?
If you wish you can email me direct by replacing the first "a" with "r."
and deleting the obvious bit in the address given here.
Thanks in advance for looking.

I'll be damned!! It is there. No PID info in the stream, that is what

I will put tsreader on it and tell you have to program.
Enter the freq and SR manually and you will see the carrier.
