Newbie to PC-HDTV hookup, need help please

Hello,
I have a HDMI output on tv- but my desktop is a compact computer, i dont have any outputs for it expect vga. i got a vga splitter, i hooked up vga to my monitor and a hdmi to vga on my tv. and used the splitter, but nothing is coming up on my samsung tv. should this setup have worked?

only one vga port? try hooking up just one vga to hdmi cable to the tv and setting your resolution to the televisions resolution and try again.
