Hello All, I just read an article that states that
http/www.skype.com has a free version for the Pocket PC with Windows
2003 and 400Mhz. of processing power.

You can make and receive calls from any skype users worldwide so
internet phoning is free. However you must have wifi to use this
program.

Does anyone currently use this service? I noted it also is for the PC.

Yes. Works well, also into the POTS with SkypeOut.

I've been using skype for a while now and it works great, the latest version
allows you to make calls to POTS lines for a small fee. I also use free
world dialup and vonage on my ppc. The bad thing about vonage is that it's
only available in the states, fwd is good but for now you can only make
calls to toll free numbers and other fwd members as well as voip subscribers
on other systems.

You must also have wm2003 and a specific processor according to the specs.

The minimum is a 400MHz processor. So, your 5450 should be fine.

I just tried out Skype for the Pocket PC on a Dell Axim X30 (624MHz
version) today and it worked surprisingly well. It seemed like the
latency was slightly more for comm between a Pocket PC to a PC vs. a PC
to a PC. But, it was much better (small latency and clearer voice
quality) than other free VoIP apps I've tried and had excellent echo
cancellation.

I got a Skypeout account recently, I've managed one POTS call so far
and the quality was okay, not as good as my vonage line but good
enough for calling from hotspots. The last two or three times I've
tried to use it for POTS calls it failed to connect. My impression is
the Skype network was clogged. It's nice to have the Skype option for
some calls but it does not replace my Vonage service.
