The only way for Ballmer to save face is to just stop speaking out. Microsoft should find some intrepid person, young or old doesn't matter, who can start doing the talking for the company as a "Senior Vice President." Ballmer can fade to black as the background guy, and eventually when he is replaced it will look like Ballmer retiring, not being cut.

That could take a year or two though..

[citation][nom]h83[/nom]The problem with Microsoft is that with the exception of windows and office, all the other products are simply crap!!![/citation]

I wouldn't go that far. They do have a few good periferals that are good too. They have the absolute best wireless mouse out there by far with the sidewinder x8. They do have quality keyboards too.

just get somebody who actually uses the devices they're trying to design and all will go better! Get a young mind in there and let that mind think outside the box. That is the key to making good products that are actually wanted by consumers.

[citation][nom]schwiing[/nom]Bill gates should just come back IMO** (sorry, browser crash earlier)[/citation]
Lemme guess, it was Firefox.

About time!
The only thing he could do was shout, and think that he was funny doing so.
Guys like that have a home on the local flea markets.

As everyone ignores the fact that MS makes their real cash from enterprise software, not a single one of the listed items in the article. Terrible prediction, though I won't shed a tear if it happens.

I don't care for Ballmer, he's entertaining though. I do care for the products MS produce. For instance, I own an MS Keyboard, an MS headset, and once I owned an MS mouse (never again, Razer for me). I can safely say, the keyboard and headset are the two best I've ever had. As for Win7? Best OS I've used too. Ubuntu comes close behind, and the rest of the Linux distros I've touched too. I've not had the chance to own a Mac, nor the cash. I don't think Microsoft is doing bad in all of it's not-so-known departments. Honestly, if I see Microsoft PC peripherals, it's hard for me to not buy it.
Office is my only real gripe; It's too expensive.

Ok,.... like that 8000 series keyboard that is $250, blue tooth, back lit (everything I am looking for), but the cheap paint wears off after 30 days of use and the keys pop off with the slightest pressure...

Nice hardware, only if logitech made a keyboard like that where the paint did not wear off after 30 days.... 🙂

ya a sucess or not the 360 must be the biggest money loser there by losing money still on every one they sell, have to give out countless extended warranties and almost 3-4 replacment consoles yearly to half there users and they get sued by low life companies almost every week. but with there monopoly they have with windows there is no way the company could tank. the

The PC community needs Microsoft. imagine the chaos if everyone would have to switch over to Linux with it many distro's. good luck trying to find a company that will make drivers for 1000+ modified versions of Linux.

Woo Hoo! Balmer should quit. The guy is an arrogant SOB, not to mentioned psychotic at times. Remember how he grab an employee's iphone and stomp on it?? And his fallout with BillGates...said that MS don't need him. Look who is not needed now, eh?? What comes around, goes around. Steve Balmer is a big time failure. Isn't MS stock is less than half of what it used to be back in Bill Gates time? There's no excuse. He should quit.

You people saying that MS is only good for Windows and Office and PC peripherals are forgetting all the other Enterprise software it makes. SQL Server ? Excellent product. Visual Studio ? .Net Framework ? some of the best developer tools. Don't think that Microsoft is going down because it can't compete with some gay phone. There's more money in B2B then B2C.

I love my zune. Sure the ipod is cool and hay have more apps but Im never buying into a closed system that controls your every decision (and your wallet).

For you people touting all the google love do you really think that google is any better than Microsoft????? Youd just be trading one evil for another except that the new evil(google) will know every last detail about you and everyone you love. If Google wins out over Microsoft it will eventually become the "Mother" who watches over everyones every last breath. I say no thank you!!

Did someone not mentioned Microsoft Surface? It's one of the best multi-touch device I have even seen. It has released years earlier then iphone

The real problem as I see it is vision. You can headhunt the brightest CEO's on the planet, but that person will have nothing of import to contribute to MS without vision. I think the article hit it on the head when it stated that MS has missed virtually every new tech market of the past decade. Look at how the industry and consumers glom onto almost every new gadget from Apple with ooohs! and aaahs!. For me, personally, I grow rired of watching the now somewhat lame tech demos of "Touch" table tops, and other such MS vaporware.
Apple creates I-pods. MS creates Zune (a poooooor copy).
Nintendo creates Wii.MS creates NATAL (Yet to be seen, but I hardly believe it will be anything near new and innovative).
Android,Palm and I-phone software rule the cellphone world.
MS pushes back Windows Mobiole 7.0 until somewhere in 2011.Meanwhile Large producers such as HTC begin phasing out windows mobile phones altogether because they just don't impress anyone really.

For a company with almost limitless resources and finances at it's disposal, it seems rather odd to me that they are no longer able to innovate in almost any sense of the word.

not sure why your all really fusing about this, it's not like anyone really listens to steve anyways. I mean look at the keynote this year, his buddy on stage knew more about the setup then steve did, and if your suprised by that then I'm not sure your really paying attention to who's who in MS. Lets just keep an eye on where they end up at years end with all the promises made on stage cause everything they mentioned directly effects me since they hit on everything that I use every day.

Hmm I was told that large stocks tend to split and go down in price over time and that this is basically what happened to the Microsoft stock. I doubt he's going to be leaving in 2010. Look at all his good speeches for windows 7 launch. I think he's right where he should be. I think the news media just pulls random stuff out of their a$$.
