I have a lenovo y50. I started up m y computer and it didn't connect to the internet. I looked in network connections, and my nic was not there. I then looked in device manager, and under network adapters there was only my intel wireless 3160 and virtualbox adapter. I checked in the bios and there was a option to enable/disable wireless network but not wired network. Thanks in advance and please help.

Isn't there any unknown device listed under device manager? try enabling in device manager under view->show hidden devices and check if any unknown device or your lan controller appears.

To fix this problem, reconnect this hardware device to the computer."

I went to realtek's '98 site and got the drivers, but it says take your device out of deep sleep.

Hmmm... I found a manual 2 manuals online. One tells how to take apart my laptop, and the other one tells how to use windows 8.1. Very helpful. There is also a bios update on the lenovo website. Should I install that?

now it shows up in device manager as nic, it also shows up in network connections. But now when it just says identifying instead .of my network name. Then it says unidentified network and it has it as a limited connection. When I use troubleshooter it says. "Ethernet" does not have a valid IP configuration.

So you got your NIC detected and installed, good, as for the IP assignment some routers apply their DHCP only on their wireless clients and not via wired ones, either enter the router and look if there's an option to enable DHCP on LAN clients (or maybe on LAN ports 1 to x) or set an static IP in the same network your router is, i.e. if router is 192.168.0.1 try using the following values:

IP address: 192.168.0.55
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS Server: 8.8.8.8

So you have it like this:

IP Address: 192.168.2.15
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.2.1
DNS Server: 8.8.8.8

Try making ping to 192.168.2.1, if it's successful try a ping to 74.125.229.250, if that's successful as well you should be able to browse the internet.
