The original classic controller was a mistake. Totally un-ergonomic. I tried it and much preferred the original Gamecube controllers for playing Smash Bros with. This would be a tremendous step forward, IMHO.
And, honestly, I don't know why anyone would bother patenting anything about the original Classic controller.
