[citation][nom]Marco925[/nom]You didn't learn anything from the original Wii Console did you? Clearly you didn't read the sales figures of the original wii, Nintendo knows what they're doing. they reinvented gaming as we know it today. they know that people don't want to spend thousands of dollars on a console. And they know graphics don't sell as well as innovation, they've got almost everyone covered and Social features sell. that's why Xbox Live is so popular, and that's why they took a hint from nintendo's Mii's to create avatars.[/citation]
On the contrary; I liked the Wii, I own a Wii, and my ONLY disappointment (note that I do not have an HDTV, so graphics are not of huge concern) is the relative lack of games for the thing. The Wii was genius in that it allowed for intuitive control that could be used from anyone of the age of 2 to 200. The new controllers got the interface out of the way, and involved LESS button pushing. There was less technicality, less options to think about, and brought the user closer to the game they played. Having a pad means moving between 2 screens, it means more buttons, and buttons that move and are unstandardized between games. It means more options to think about. It means more distractions. It means more battery breaks (especially if you have kids who wear them down, and are not willing to charge them for more than 10-20 minutes at a time). It means more expensive parts to break. It means more fighting between siblings and 'friends' over who gets to play what roles in a game.

Where the Wii brought people of all ages to video games because anyone could do it, this is going to alienate people from games. Yes, it will still sell (parents will always buy a nintendo product for their kids regardless of how 'good' or 'bad' it is because the company is viewed as 'safe'), but it will not take off like the Wii did, it will not be as fun as the Wii was, and (perhaps more importantly) it is not going to be as cheap as the Wii was while many people who have times for games are suffering from a seemingly never ending 'recession'. Bad product brought to market at a bad time. This will not make Nintendo the same profit as the Wii did.

Keep in mind what happened to the last console with a monitor on the controller... dreamcast did not exactly make it as big as they had hoped

Personally, I think the Wii U gamepad is too big, they are trying to be innovative again, but it was not the controllers that was innovative with the Wii, but the fact that they were using motion control. This created a different type of gaming, but it is no longer unique as Xbox/Sony both have their own flavors now. The 2 screen approach of the Wii U is not very innovative either as Sony is doing something very similar with the PS Vita and Microsoft announced SmartGlass to it with 3rd party mobile devices. The battery life is just another thing on the list.

See my post on my blog about Nintendo and how I feel they should get out of the hardware business. They could make so much money if they just gave up on the hardware.

[citation][nom]darkenmoon97[/nom]What did you guys expect with all that hardware? 8-12 Hours?[/citation]
more like 24....companies are very lazy when it comes to battery development...what a shame

I guess people just expect this stuff to run forever on magical fairy dust and shit. Get real. The estimate on run time doesnt surprise me one bit, considering it has a screen and stuff. Just get some extra rechargeable batteries and quit whining, FFS!

you know, i don't like wireless controllers. i have burned through 3 cables for the 360 because family don't take care of them, give me a good wired controller over anything battery powered.

do some of you guys not even read the article?
last paragraph:
"The good news in all of this is that you can play while charging via AC adapter, so you won't have to take a break when the charger runs out of juice."

Tese controllers look like they are gong to be stupidly expensive and undoubtedly it Willy only shipping Wilhelmsen one of Themsen... No thanks

Less is not always necessarily better in gaming. Your way of thinking would imply that games like Angry Birds and other mobile nonsense are the most immersive and engaging just because the controls are "simple" and "undistracting."

More buttons means more options, more options means more variety, and more variety typically results in a more diverse and dynamic metagame. I would assume that most Tom's readers would agree, since as PC fans we tend to favor keyboards over controller button layouts and mice over restricted sensitivity pads and analog sticks. That's because they give us more control.

Go watch the Pikmin 3 E3 coverage to see a good example of how more can mean better without necessarily being overly complex.

You invalidate your entire argument by trying to make this comparison. First, it's a slippery slope. Second, there are so many differences between the VMU and the Wii U tablet I shouldn't even have to explain why that comparison is ridiculous.

In addition, the Dreamcast did't fail because of the VMU; its failure resulted because a number of other more important issues, and even despite its failure the Dreamcast is considered by many to be a great console that never had the chance to live up to its potential.

I think the Wii-U will launch like the Wii did it will be very hot then forgotten. I didn't get to see much E3 coverage but I'm guessing if Nintendo has 3rd party support that means the specs will be close to the Ps3 and Xbox of the current I believe 7th generation much like what killed the Wii that support won't be there when Sony and Microsoft jump to the 8th gen nobody is gonna want to port down when it's hard enough porting for different architectures already
