no display on laptop once I've entered password

When I power up, everything comes up on screen as normal. I enter my password but the the screen goes black. Ctrl alt delete works and I can switch it off. What's happening? Tried removing battery and reconnecting.

Sounds like an update problem, can you get into safe mode?

Has happened to me before, just hold the power button until the computer shuts off and then it should work next time. If on Windows 8, turning off hybrid shutdown also prevents this issue sometimes.
