No sound with external speakers with sony home theatre

Our sony home theatre system model DAV-HDX675 will not sync with our new LG smart tv. We have an optical cable hooked up from the sony system to the TV. No sound comes out of the home theatre system with netflix or playing a DVD. Any ideas?

We are using an optical cable which goes from the optical digital audio out to the Sony digital amplifier digital in. Only one spot to plug in at both ends. Confused?
