Dish Network isn't much better. Although they're still running a few SD
PPVs in letterbox, the amount has lessened over the past few months as has
the length of time they're available.
I just don't get it. Any idiot knows there are MORE people with widescreen
tvs now, not less. We may not be mainstream yet but we represent a bigger
percentage of the viewers than we did a year ago and by next year, I bet at
least 25% of viewers will have a 16:9 tv of some sort.
Some of the networks are smartening up. The Fox Movie channel, for
instance is putting on a lot more LBX versions of older movies.
I suggested this to CJ @ Dish 2 months ago and he thought it was a good
idea: have a special channel dedicated to widescreen where all movies would
be either in their original aspect ratio or enhanced anamorphic for 16:9
televisions. Obviously it never went any further than our conversation.
The bottom line for both Dish & DTV is that while people that are spending
all this money on widescreen (HD or otherwise) tvs may be willing to wait a
while for more true HD programming, they ARE NOT as patient when it comes
to having to watch 4:3 programming on a 16:9 tv. Whichever company moves
quicker in that direction will have the customer edge in my opinion. The
thing is we're not talking the big expensive equipment and bandwidth
problems. Financially, providing more widescreen programming would be
fairly easy - plus it would by a little time with customer frustration on
the HD end of things.
Now I just know I'm going to get flamed here about viewers with 4:3 sets not
wanting LBX . My guess is as more widescreen programs start to appear,
there will be more 4:3 owners that opt to buy a 16:9 television than
actually complain. I don't believe it's a situation of people not wanting
to switch to widescreen so much as they're waiting to see if there's going
to be enough programming available to justify it.
