They're actually using polarization filters to make it MUCH better in sunlight than a standard AMOLED screen. In fact in direct sunlight it is even better than Samsung's Super AMOLED+ displays, which by themselves are MUCH better than older AMOLED screens in bright light.
It's still nowhere near as good as a passive non-backlit technology like e-ink for reading. But it is at least usable. My current phone has an older AMOLED screen (pre Super AMOLED) and it is terrible in direct sunlight.
