The same government that wants to give the president an Internet Kill Switch. The same government that adds BULLSHIT terminology to Bills in congress that sound really good but do the exact opposite like the Homeland (in)Security Act, (un)Patriot(ic) Act, and the Protect IP Act which has nothing to do with what the title suggests. Yeah, if I was a rebel I wouldn't trust the U.S.'s "Shadow Internet" just seeing what its doing on its own turf, and that's not even including all the backstabbing and lies the U.S. is renown for in the rest of the worlds eyes.

[citation][nom]The Editor[/nom]So $52 million for "shadow Internet"...wow....How many teachers were fired this week? Is country is so screwed up with its priorities.[/citation]
You think it's the president's job to hire and fire teachers rather than local communities?

Who's he giving this to...the Muslim Brotherhood? Hamas? Hezbollah? Yeah, the ones that love us and Israel (our only allies in the region). He's feeding the hand that will bite him. Unfortunatly, when that happens many innocent Americans and/or Europeans will die. Then he'll wonder why.

[citation][nom]otacon72[/nom]If it was just that easy I think they would've done it....[/citation]
this is a goverment that spent 2-500$ on a plunger for a toilet. and estimated the cost to remover cellophane (scotch) tape to be in the 2-12million $ range (wisconsin)

yea, they know how to do things on the cheap.

In other words:

If you, the people decide the internet is being used against you and decide to disable it, then the gov't can quickly and easily get it up and running again.

Remember... the internet was designed as a military tool. It's highest priority is still to the gov't. Not civilians.

Somehow, I doubt that the real purpose of this network is to help the rebels. The track record of US government supporting dictators and tyrants in name of anti-communism doesn't help my belief.

What I read greatly differs from what they are actually doing.
They say they are creating a Phantom Internet to help people.

Yet back here there trying to block internet access to websites, and what you can or cannot watch.
http://act.demandprogress.org/sign/pipa_letter/?akid=696.182567.Co3VU5&rd=1&t=2

The Internet, designed and created for the exchange of free thought, and speech between people around the world, to bring people closer together and gain more insight and knowledge.
Only Knowledge of which they say you are allowed to learn.

I sir am disappoint.

They're not blocking free speech in that sense though. The 'Protect IP' bill is based on preventing counterfeit goods being sold from foreign domains. It's not meant to block people who are complaining about the american government.

Despite Google complaining there are a huge number of massive corporations that support it. They lose millions of dollars every year from counterfeit goods.

If you want America to get out "this mess" then you inject billions more dollars into the economy through the removal of counterfeit sales.

I know it may be asking a lot here, but how about governments, by that I mean the free world governments cause well the rest won't anyway, keep their grubby little hands the hell off the internet as it is.

Sunday the New York Times claimed that the Obama administration is leading a global effort to launch a "shadow" Internet and mobile phone service for helping rebels face against governments intent on censoring or shutting down communications to the outside world.

Clean up your own house first! I think this is nothing but pre-election propaganda. For the people? Defending freedom? Pull the other one..

"We see more and more people around the globe using the Internet, mobile phones and other technologies to make their voices heard as they protest against injustice and seek to realize their aspirations," said Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton in an email response to the New York Times' findings.

Yeah? Sniff..your administration's hypocritical bull--it does not smell of roses. Must be an election coming up, eh..time to start waving American flags again, time to start saying all the right things to the right people. Yawn. Madam, you come right out of a comic book and I think that most of the American people..including those losing their homes, jobs and their FREEDOMS..can see straight through you and want you gone from office. After all..change is good.

[citation][nom]mienai ninja[/nom]I'd like to have something like that here in the US.Then again I imagine pedophiles would want a network like that.[/citation]
They already do have one like that, it's called the 'normal' internet.
[citation][nom]SmileyTPB1[/nom]Great, now Obama is going to claim that he invented the internet.[/citation]
Better than Al Gore claiming it, ass-clown that he is.
[citation][nom]eddieroolz[/nom]Somehow, I doubt that the real purpose of this network is to help the rebels. The track record of US government supporting dictators and tyrants in name of anti-communism doesn't help my belief.[/citation]
You got that right, there is always an ulterior motive.

1) The cost of this is laughable - there are people in congress who spent more on porn and hookers.

2) Communication is essential for pro-democracy movements anywhere in the world. This offers that.

3) The West has a duty to actively aid those pursuing democracy and freedom, even if it costs us money. After all, we consider democracy an inalienable right for ourselves, so why not for those living a few thousand miles away from your home?

what's so free about this so called "Shadow Internet" we all should be equal to some extent and should be able to express ourselves however we like....that's why so many american people died and die for...i pity the american way of life

And that's exactly the problem. A lot of countries don't allow their citizens to speak up. This shadow internet enables clandestine communication between opposition members, something that would be a vast improvement for democracy movements everywhere.

Because that's not your country and you don't have a right to tell other people how to run it.

Democracy isn't all it's cracked up to be, since when does giving the people a vote ever stop someone motivated from subverting the process (like Jeb Bush did for Dubya in Florida).

Hey wasn't this a plot for a splinter cell game? Yeah it was splinter cell 3 haha! Had to run around disabling a shadownet before taking out your best friend who was also the main bad guy!
