Old iPhone 4

My wife has just been given an iPhone 4 from one of the colleagues at work. I've looked online and it seems there is an option to update the software to IOS 9 but this seems to have problems. Should I bother trying to update or just use the phone as is? The problem is that we can't download any apps etc.... Thanks in advance for the help!!

iPhone 4 will not run the newer iOS, 4s is supported though but even then you will find that it's a bit too slow. Just use it with whatever is on it now. Looks like the latest iOS for the 4 is 7.1.2
