Solved! On our sanyo TV (only a few months old) my husband muted tv to listen to something outside, and when he unmuted it, no sound.

Check if the volume level is set to normal and also try to power-cycle the television by turning it off, unplugging the power cord and turn it back on.

Thanks everyone who posted suggestions. It turned out it was our HD cable box. replaced it and everything is back to normal.

I have that happen sometimes on my Samsung tv. On it changing channels will usually fix it. I usually just do channel up or down then right back. May not fix your problem but easy to try.
