Onkyo system not playing sound.

My Onkyo system has not been playing any sound when I connect the optical cable directly to my motherboard, an ASUS P8Z77-I DELUXE. The system works in a 2.1 system when I connect it through the tv. ( I use my tv as a monitor.)

Are you selecting Digital Optical or possibly S/PDIF Out as the default playback device?
