OTA Antenna BS?

Got new HR10-250 HD DirecTV set installed this week. Every thing works
fine and HD does make a huge difference in picture quality compared to
the old RCA 40 that was replaced.

The rub is the OTA antenna does not appear to be working OR I cannot get
transmissions from two large cities 30 miles away. How can I determine
which is true. The tech's that installed the OTA antenna claimed
several things:
1) OTA antenna would not get signal -- we were too far away and no way
to test from software
2) The searching for Antenna in the menu was for the old kind of
box/antenna and would not work with the HD OTA antenna signal since it
was combined at the HD dish and had to be separated at the box.

Is all this true or just BS.

Talking with tech support at DirecTV they told me that they were
committed to correctly installing the OTA antenna but would not support
any reception problems (I understand this part) but how do I tell if it
was installed correctly? I have checked behind the box and there is a
splitter that goes from one cable in to cable out for sat and another
for ant. Beyond that what else should I check?

Hi-def is too new to satellite to make an accurate determination. There is
too much proprietary stuff at this early stage of the game. Hi-def signals
are awful touchy and prone to many things a normal TV signal isn't. My guess
is that the software is just one small notch above "beta".

Right now the equipment is too spendy with limited service. Not worth being
a ginea pig.
