Packard Bell laptop shows logo then switches to black screen with cursor instead of Windows login screen!

I have a packard bell laptop. There was some windows updates (Windows 8) while shutting down the last time the laptop was on. After switching it on a few days ago the screen showed the Packard Bell logo like it always does but then instead of then showing the Windows login screen next it shows a black screen with just the cursor of the mouse. What could be the problem. Really don't want to lose everything that's on there. Please help.
