[citation][nom]blazorthon[/nom]8/16 bit computer's being much more rare as a home computer today (not as rare for a calculator or similarly low end device) is not because of software incompatibility. At least Google seems to be trying to fix the mes that it's OEM guys have been making. Android wouldn't be nearly as fragmented if the OEM guys would do what they're supposed to do. Microsoft's OEMs don't limit their machines to specific service pack updates or even specific versions of Windows to force people to upgrade or replace their computer and Apple also updates their iPhones, why do the Android OEMs think it's okay to keep most of the phones on outdated versions of Android? On the topic of Windows Phone, I actually like the route it's taken. WP7 is great and WP8 seems like it's also great so far. WP6 sucked, but MS has done a good job fixing it and their marketing campaign, although not very large, is still pretty good (bash Androids that failed you to get free Windows phones).@maddy143dedThat's a great post you have there. The OEM's didn't do their jog properly, so now Google had to step in. Doesn't mean that Google will abandon them, but an FU to companies that are hurting your own company in the smart phone market is just what those companies need. Perhaps they will get a clue from Google's attempt to fix this mess and help themselves by helping their customers as they should be doing already.[/citation]

EDIT: At the end of my post, it's job, not jog. It would be nice for Tom's Guide articles to have editing options like Tom's Hardware articles do.

[citation][nom]hannibal[/nom]This is really worrying news. It may mean that android phones lose the market... hopeful future?closed apple phone systemclosed windows phone systemopen android phone system (with some small UI variations?)suposed future?closed apple phone systemclosed windows phone systema lot of dimishing small phones os systems, one open android and all other closed (old android partners...) That would be a nighmare![/citation]

It would be worrying news if it was going to happen and I highly doubt that it will. The Android partners need to choose between Google's Android and Microsoft's Windows Phone. They don't have many other options right now. None of them have what it takes to make a new OS and sell it, so they need to choose to partner with other companies to sell their devices. Google and Microsoft are the only big companies for them to choose from for this that already have some market penetration.

Android is more popular than WP, so it stands to reason that unless these OEMs are managed by idiots, they will continue backing Google. Whether or not they do so properly from now on is what remains to be seen. With Google making the Nexus phones, Google can now set the standards for other Androids to be judged by. Will Google keep all of their Nexus phones fully updated? Will they be built well? Will they have great features? Will their batteries last more than a few hours? Overall, will they be great phones? This also remains to be seen, but at least Google's Android name is not purely at the mercy of the OEM manufacturers that don't even keep their phones updated.

Attention OEMs: You cannot produce a better operating system than Android. In fact, you can't even make Android better (Touchwiz, MotoBlur, Sense). If it wasn't for the fact that the Nexus line doesn't have the best range of hardware (e.g. the SG3 is going to trounce the Galaxy Nexus in terms of hardware), nobody would buy your phones.

Stick to what you're good at and stop trying to embarrass yourselves.
