PBS Sound

Good Morning All,
I haven't yet resolved my problem of being unable to see the Gem Shopping
Network but live in hope.
There is another problem I would appreciate help with. There are a bunch
of PBS channels on one of the satellites I can see but they do not have
normal sound. I understand that the sound is there but is in digital
format. My PanSat 2500A does have a digital sound output connector but my
Home Theater is not very fancy and does not have an input for digital sound.
I don't want to spend much more money on this thing by buying another
expensive system so am wondering what would be the cheapest way to decode
this sound (PDIF format I believe) so that I can get it onto my speakers.

Thanks, I'll do that. I was hoping there might be some type of free
standing decoder that I could buy for very little money!!

"Montana PBS" which is on the same AMC3 satellite has regular sound in
addition to digital sound.

Almost all of my TV viewing is PBS programming. I use an inexpensive
Walmart home theatre system ... plus my computer has a s/pdif digital
input. A lot of computer sound cards have s/pdif inputs and if you have
the appropriate drivers, it is possible to use your computer. If you do
any video capturing from PBS with your computer, it is necessary to use
the s/pdif.

If you do get an inexpensive home theatre system, it is best to make sure
that it has an optical connector as well as a coaxial connector. I found
that I had a low-level hum when using the coaxial connector. You can get
an adapter at Radio Shack to convert from coaxial to optical if
necessary.

Good Luck,

PON

Thank you. I will look into this too. My computer is fairly old and in
any case is far away from the TV set so I'll try for a cheap home theatre
system. That will make a total of three!! Ah well, I can always use one of
them just to play CDs.

I am in Canada. If I can't find something suitable here I could probably
buy one from the States and pay Mr. Martin et al. the taxes!!

There are plenty of el-cheapo dolby-digital boxes in Wallmart and just about
every discount electronics store here in Canada.

they used to sell free standing decoders, but now that Dolby Digital
5.1/AC-3 is pretty much standard they are built into many receivers etc. so
you don't need one.

when you say cheap, what price range? my DD receiver cost $1000 new about
5 years ago. You can get better now for about $300 or so. $700-$1000 can
get you 6.1 and 7.1 compatibility

and those prices do not include speakers.

The so called Home Theatre I have only cost about $100 several months ago.
I would not wish to pay much more than that again. The one I have does
almost everything I want very well. The idea of a free standing decoder
appeals to me. I'll see if I can find one somewhere.

The risk with going too low in price is that it's a throw away item -if
nothing else because it's imported and probably poor quality.Ya get what ya
pay fer.
