PDA and Webcam

Has anybody had experience with using a PDA to display
live video from an internet webcam???

I have been trying using a Linksys WVC54G camera and
a Dell Axim 5. I can get to the intro web page for the camera,
but I am unable to click on the view video. If it type in the
URL for the video, I get an error.

I am unable to find any type of control to allow me to view the
video.

Any thoughts or ideas???

How is your live video previewed in a browser (e.g. Java
app, ActiveX, JavaScript)?

An ActiveX control and the video is imbedded in an internal web page on the
camera.

Yep - the web page uses scripting to set up the display for viewing,
something you cannot run at this time on the PPC. I have a similiar camera
(dlink) and found this to be the case.

There is other software that will stream to a PPC from a video camera
(microsoft potrait, etc.), however it will not be possible to load and run
it on the remote camera directly. So, in other words you will probably not
be able to make the connection using the camera as is.

The good news is that you should be able to get static pictures from the
camera on to the device. On the DLink I copied the address of the picture
itself as a favorite, and a quick hit or update gives me the latest. But it
does fall quite short of live video.

The model is DCS-900W. Would have to recheck to make sure, but fairly
certain.

This has been bugging me since I got my WVC54G, but I think I have a
solution.

Download Windows Media Player 6.4!!!

http/http/download.microsoft.com/download/winmediaplayer/tech/2/WCE/EN-
US/WMPPPC.exe

When you install it, when asked do not update mmtimer.dll to the older
version.

To use, File / Open URL to http/<your camera's ip address>/img/video.asf

It seems to only play 7m 9s of video before you have to replay it, but
since I just wanted it for a quick check every now and then, pressing play
again is not that much effort. Putting it on "repeat" seems to
automatically restart it after rebuffering the video.

I've only just done this so I don't know what the long term effects are, so
use it at your own risk. However, I'm sitting at work looking at a live
picture from home on my iPaq5550.

I have installed MediaPlayer on my Pocket PC, I can open the URL
"http/192.168.0.8/img/video.asf" in Internet explorer en afterdownloading
some minutes I can play the file in the Player.
You write that you can use File/Open URL and see a live stream?
When I use Tools/Open URL and type "http/192.168.0.8/img/video.asf" I get
error 'Windows Media Player cannot play file'

Any ideas?

Have you installed Window Media Player 6.4 from the link I posted?
/img/video.asf will not open in IE on a PPC and will, as you have spotted,
try to download the .asf file.

If you have installed WMP6.4, your Pocket PC will now have two Windows
Media players in Programs and you must use the one whose icon looks like a
clapperboard with 321 on it. This version of media player has a "File"
option and "Open URL", the pre-installed media player (WMP 9.0) has the
"Open URL" in its "Tools" menu.

Just make sure you are using the correct media player.
