Phantom twitter notifications.

I've been getting notifications on twitter that don't show up when I click "my notifications" on the top-left of the screen.

What does this sound like to you? And might it be something shady/ominous?

Just a few hours ago, it said that I have 1 new notification, but when I enter the menu that lists all of my notifications, it doesn't show anything new.

I'd say it's probably just an error on Twitter.
I sometimes get false "best answer" notifications on this THF, when I check it's actually someone else who posted best answer. I consider stuff like that to be too trivial to follow up, life's too short.

If it concerns you, contact their admin and ask, there may be other Twitter users who have done the same thing.
