fwiw, I have a Phillips DSR6000 DirecTivo.

What exactly is the phone line for? It was driving me nuts constantly
trying to connect while I was on the phone so I disconnected it. So far
it hasn't had any effect on my tivo-ing or program guide. I don't think
this version of Tivo is getting or has gotten an update in ages. Do I
need to plug it back in?
Thx

Pay-Per-View billing is done via the phone line.
You can a limited number before the DirecTV part of
the DirecTiVo demands that it be allowed to call home.

If you havent recd the upgrade yet (to 6.2) you need the phone line
plugged in. There is a setting to tell Tivo to detect it you are on the
phone and to detect a dial tone, are they on or off?

There was a recent problem which affected 1st generation DirecTV DVRs.
The Phillips DSR6000 was an affected brand. The call to DirecTV for PPV
event billing was attempted hourly or more often and always failed.

The call was attempted even for those who didn't have unreported PPV events.
A configuration problem at the DVR call center prevented a successful call,
so the call was rescheduled in the next minute and perhaps an hour later.

The problem has now been resolved. You can replug the phone connection
and you should no longer hear frequent DVR connection attempts on the phone line.

I do have "phone in use" detection set to on. It just seemd like it was
picking up, checking, then hanging up all the time while I was on the
phone so I unplugged it. It has only been unplugged for a few weeks.
My software version is 3.1.0c2-01-1-001. I'm pretty sure that's quite
old. Not sure if my old DSR is going to get this 6.2 I've read about.
