Our DVL909 will suddenly stop playing a DVD and try and eject it - the
mechanism locks up with the motor still running.

After the disc is removed by removing the top brace, the laser
assembly seems jammed very close to the drive spindle. After gently
pushing it away from the spindle, there is a click and the mechanism
is now free and the draw can be opened. The laser mechanism seems to
move freely, but jams against the spindle assembly from time to time
-for some strange reason. It plays cds OK

Any help would be appreciated.

David did you ever get to the bottom of the problem. I have a 909 doing the
same thing. One word of warning do not push the sled away from the spindle
you WILL break the gear box off the side of the laser head,
The thoughts so far are that this is a software problem. You will not that
the tray drops before the disc has stopped rotating and the laser head has
not pulled back out of the way. of course it jams. Unde the tray you will
see a bunch of gears moving them will cause the tray to rise and thereby
free the head, Try stopping the play with the head near the ouside lane of
the disk you wil note that tray still drops nastilly but the head does not
get caught up in the rush , Give me a call 01732457476 Pete

By the way dave it will play cds fine cos it uses the other head. Pioneer
in there infinite wisdom only allow the very expensive dvd laser out to
play for dvds only in order to extend the laser life

To manually move the pickups on these machines you have to turn the worm
gear that is on the motor shaft. The pickup moves slowly but you will move.
