Pioneer PD-Z970M cd's not engaging to play

I've bought a 2nd hand Pioneer stereo separate system but when I put my cd cartridge in full of 6 cd's to play the cd machine just goes through the motion but never picks a cd to play, can anybody tell me whats the problem please!!

I've just bought a 2nd hand pioneer separate's stereo & my cd player when I press the open button nothing happens & I would like to know how to get it working again!!

I can think of two things
1. Some Pioneer CD players require the disc to be placed with the label down (not facing you). The manual will mention that.
2. If the laser in the CD changer is bad it won't see any of the discs.
