planning on get vzw and need advise

Hi there:
I'm planning on getting a family plan on vzw. I check the website and don't
know which plan is suitable for us. We need 4 phones, we don't make long
distance calls. I live near a Con Edison plan (turbine) and I was told that
may not get a good signal from my house since the coned plan is about 6-7
blocks from us (it's supposed to be a "hot spot") . I live in Astoria, in
New York City. Does anyone know if this is true?
Also, what kind of phone is best? I've been reading some posts on this NG
and don't really understand the difference between CDMA and the other one.
Sorry but I'm a newbie and need lots of info. Another thing, digital and
analog? which is better? and why. We don't need fancy phones with cameras,
just something that works and to get a good reception.
I really need the free call to verizon phones since I mostly be calling my
children and husband. My children, on the other hand, will be calling their
friends. The reason I want to try Verizon is that I spoke with a couple of
friends and they do get a good reception from their houses, but they don't
live in Astoria.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not from New York but I would like to tell you how I ended up signing
with VZW.

In my house, I used to have a bad reception with my former cell carrier.
I used to walk out in the cold of winter just to carry out an important
tech support call from work. I head the IT department where I work.

After my contract with the former carrier was over, I started researching
on what will be the best carrier that can deliver good signal quality
in my house. I borrowed phones from a couple of my friends at
work. A Cingular phone, and a Verizon Wireless phone. The VZW
phone had the most number of bars on the signal meter. I used the
VZW phone inside my house, upstairs, downstairs with no problem.

My next research was what VZW phone was best for me. Most of the
time when I'm out and about, I carry my laptop. And when I have
I support call from work, and I have to connect to my corporate
network, I use the phone with my laptop to dial into the carrier's
network and vpn over to my corporate network. Like you,
I don't have a need for a camera phone. The LG VX4500
was the phone I chose. This what I have right now, and I'm
happy with it. This is all digital, it has a very functional
speakerphone, a pleasing color screen, etc.

Check out www.phonescoop.com click on carriers then click on Verizon. All
of the phones that Verizon currently offers will be listed there and you can
get reviews on each one.

Signal bars are apples and oranges between phones. You should try talking on
each phone during busy and non-busy time of day and see if...
Your call goes through

how incomparable they are:

Last paragraph:

Don't take the "number of bars" display on the phone
too seriously. It's much too coarse and it contains
far too little information. You can't use it to perform
scientific comparisons of phones.

The best carrier by far in the NYC market is Verizon so you won't go wrong
with them. I have friends in Astoria and never noticed a problem there. We
have 3 vx4500 phones and are happy with them. The vx4500 has a speakerphone
feature which comes in handy and work well.

Verizon digital uses the CDMA system so there is no decision making there.
When you go to the store they will only present phones that are compatible
so you don't have to worry about picking a phone that doesn't work. The only
real decision is that some phones do not have analog. Analog is of no value
except if you travel to some remote areas that may have an old analog only
system. I travel quite a bit thru NY/NJ/PA and have not needed analog for at
least the past 18 months.

if it does live up to your expetetions..Free, except for the call that you
make

Thank you guys:
All of you gave me great advises. I'll try the websites some of you
recommend. At least I know digital is the way to go. It's true what Watson
says I can try for 15 days. Thanks again. I'll keep you posted.
