Pocket Streets (Problem with Map)

Hi,

For a long time now, i have had problems with Central London Maps for Pocket
Streets.

I have never experienced any problems with other maps,
but when i try to open the London Map the machine
hangs.
Sounds strange, but it's true.

I have tried reinstalling, and then it might work for one or
two times, but then the hanging starts again.

Also: Can anyone tell me how i can uninstall all files that are used by
Pocket Streets. I have the feeling that some are still not removed after an
uninstall.

Hope for help on this mysterious problem.

Best wishes

Hei Michael,
This is a well known bug that Microsoft is working on. The Download maps
from the web site do not work for most of London or if you try to make a
Pocket Streets Map from either MapPoint 2004 Europe or Autoroute, it will
not open. Any other city works fine. Its a weird bug that looks like it
might be coming from Navtech (map database supplier).
Most people cannot get the map to open at all on a PDA, mine just
display the hourglass forever and I have to kill the program to get out of
it.

Thank you.

This has bothered me for at least half a year.
.... I always thought it had to be a problem on my PPC.

Best wishes

Michael

I haven't experienced the problem you describe,
livng in the Western US, but have used PS for quite
a while, and found it to work well...

And I wonder-

could the problem you both describe be due
to the fact that 0 deg. Longitude runs through the
area the map was created for?

As a small-time application writer, some of the
toughest bugs I've had to track down in my own code
were due to not explicitly assgning a value to variables,
and having unexpected results when the system assigned
them a value of 0.

I wonder, if you are able to create your own maps of London
for PS, if you create one just east of lon. 0 and one just west of
it, if they'll work?

I have found that microsoft streets isn't very good as a map.

The roads appear as just lines and it doesn't give the name of each road at
a reasonable zoom level.
It will give the street name i am looking for but so far zoomed in that i
can't work out a route.

I would describe it as naff.

A road map I tried under some other software name was okay however.

Ah me too! Thought it was only my ipaq too.

However you can use Autoroute to select the area you want & export to the
PDA....that way you can chose exactly the portion you want.....and more
usefully, it works fine!

Funny thing is that the downloadable map worked fine for about a year & then
suddenly stopped.....I must have re-downloaded it or something and it is a
new map.....don't know , but I had to make my own a s a way round. The
others I've tried are OK though.

Vance,
Out of the 50 or so responses I have seen from Users and Microsoft,
yours is the only one that mentions the 0 deg. Longitude idea. I use
MapPoint 2004 both North America and the Europe Version and the "little
brothers" Autoroute and Streets & Trips.
Interesting as the maps I make of central London will not open on a PDA,
but as long as the longitude is at least .5 degree's off of Zero, they open
just fine. First solution to this bug that I have seen !
Thanks alot for that one.
