Poor sound quality coming through headphones on laptop

Dont know whether the problem is software based and some settings are off but I haven't been able to find anything obvious, could this be a hardware problem I cant do anything about, what could the problem be and how could I fix it?

Headphones shouldn't require any kind of software. Are your audio drivers installed/up to date? Do the headphones work normally or better with other devices?
