So unfortunately the power button board on my laptop has become damaged and no longer works. It is connected by a ribbon cable and I am unable to get an exact replacement.

Looking around, there's a lot out there that look very similar. Would there be any issue with connecting one in the hope that it works? I am concerned this would damage the laptop.

If such an approach is not advisable, how feasible would it be to fashion a replacement (as a complete electronics novice)?

Thank you all.

Sometimes it's easier to take the plastic cap off the button and use a pencil or simlar non-metallic pointed thing to press the tiny micro switch beneath that button.

Have you looked on Ebay for you laptop model? Sometimes you'll find broken laptops that are being sold for parts for relatively cheap.
