Powering up TIVO -unsolved

I have the dreaded "powering up" message on my Tivo that has bothered me
for two weeks --Tivo support is no help and I have read all the power
problems and the hard drive bad theories...have problem with all of the
above. Tech 2 supports answer is to just buy new TIVO???? I have one of
the very first TIVOs and its still going strong --its the 6000 series
that I have a problem with... I have two of these ...one I didnt even
use till this problem surfaced...now both have the same problem????How
can both dvrs go down with the same problem at the same time??? Both
different yearage and one hasnt been used in a year..I am not alone ..
Tech 2 would like me to think this but I think it has something to do
with the software downlosd recently-I love TIVO and this really is
bothering me I just wanted anybodys thoughts on this..I have looked for
hours on the web to solve this..I just dont buy that 2 can go down at
the same time-- PLEASE HELP

Hey, statistically it's just as likely two would fail simultaneously as not.
And the one sitting idle for all that time could potentially have an
unrelated problem (drive stiction?) and the powering-up message is just the
same regardless of the problem.

Get a spare drive, put an image on it (get it off p2p networks) and then see
what happens. But given the cost of a drive and the hassle of doing it
there's something to be said for buying a new one. Save your hassle for
listing the dead one on ebay and shipping it.

Are you kidding? Perhaps you were not clear in what you were
trying to say here, but I can guarantee you that the probability
of two devices failing simultaneously is much, much, much lower
than not - "not" being the sum of the probabilities of neither
device having failed, one device failing, or the other device
failing. I'd wager that simultaneous failure is at least
1000 times less likely than any of the other outcomes.

You're assuming that the causes of failure are independent. If the
probability of both failing is causally linked (say from power spikes,
enclosed in the same overheated cabinet, etc), then probability of both
failing could be quite high. And it's quite possible that the cause
*is* linked.

Rule out everything that might link the two (which would be tough), and
*then* the probability is pretty low.

Nice way to take it out of context, but then, you are shawnie boi so
what else would one expect?

According to Sean the Comcast DVR is perfect. Now, lets see whose
boxes break more? and when your comcast one breaks how many WEEKS
will you wait for the new one?

I'm not really assuming anything. Even if the devices are in
the same environment, the probability that both would fail
simultaneously is very, very low. Only catastrophic causes
(a lightning strike, meteor impact, tornado, etc) or a
coincidental mechanical failure would cause this. The
probability that neither will fail or only one, by comparison,
is huge.

You were watching both units at the same time and saw them both fail
simultaneously!? That would be surprising. Or do you mean that both
failed within a short period of time? There are also other not so
"catastrophic" events that could cause near-simulataneous failures, such
as power spikes or brownouts.

I would agree that 2 simultaneous unrelated mechanical failures is a
pretty remote possibility, enough to investigate things that *could*
link the two.
