I'm just getting into video capture and am totally confused by all different formats/ compression etc.Anyone know a good site in layman's English please?

Also, someone posted this site, looks good so far but looks more about SVCD. Look around, I didn't spend much time there.

Mickgomm try to use search engines (like <b>google</b>), you will get good results (depends on keywords).

I suggest reading through the Matrox site. They do both consumer and broadcast hardware for video editing on the PC and have been at it since the days when the 80386 was state of the art and the Video Toster was the rage for consumer editing. They can be found at www.matrox.com

Matrox is analogue. Most of us don't have enough money to deal with analogue video, and DV or DVCAM are very, very good in quality for a less price. And when you see the quality of DV picture, you won't even think about VHS. I suggest to take a look at DV cards for NLE.
