What are the advantages and the drawbacks of using java for artificial intelligence?

A specific language has little to do with AI, other than slow response.
Which, in the context of "AI", Java as a language is. Slow.

When AI was "fresh and hot out of the oven", there were languages geared toward "knowledge", not toward "algoritmhs", like Lisp and Prolog.

These days, AI is run by Cortana / Siri / DeepBlue. If you start building AI app on Java (or any other language), you'll need several college degrees, several years, and someone to feed you during these years.
