Protecting my Drive with a password. Help!

I just wanted to protect my D drive with a password so that no else except me can open it. So i found a setting called BitLocker. It took me more than 24hrs. to encrypt my drive with 500gb data. But after that i found that the drive could be easily opened and the files in it too. After reading on google i found that BitLocker is a bit different stuff. So my question is how can i protect my drive with a simple password..nothing too complicated. Please help
