Question about scanning HDD for viruses

So I have a new PC with Windows 10 and I want to transfer photos from an old HDD with Windows XP from a bricked PC to this one, but first I need to scan for viruses which I know it has because the old PC became bricked in the middle of a scan and it detected nine Slenfbots. Can I safely use a SATA to USB and plug it in to scan it, or is it not safe (for my new PC at risk of virus transferring when plugged in)?

Your PC will be at risk, but if you have security software, it will theoretically prevent the viruses from transferring, and then you can scan it.
