Questions about VPNs

I've been researching the topic for about a week. Some confusing info out there.

Is it possible to route all traffic on my modem/router through a third party VPN? If so, does anyone have any recommendations? Or other recommendations on sealing up privacy?

Interested in focusing on privacy. My network has tenants who rent rooms from me. Not able to control what they are doing nor do I have time or much desire to monitor. Would like to attempt to make all traffic as private as possible to err on the side of caution.

I don't currently think there is anything to worry about but I ran into a situation in the past where my laptop was stolen and someone used it to torrent. I discovered this after the police returned it to me and it got me thinking on this subject.

Thanks.

Yes, it is possible. However, you'll need a router that includes support for VPN tunnels. Furthermore, the encryption layer is computationally expensive so you should expect decreased WAN<->LAN routing throughput and higher latency. In other words, if your ISP advertises ~100mbps, don't expect to get more than a fraction of that if you pass all traffic to a VPN without investing in a very powerful business class router
